Seaside links across the UK & Ireland
Links golf is the original form of the game — played on firm, wind-swept linksland between the sea and the farmable interior. Britain and Ireland are home to the world's greatest concentration of links courses.
The word 'links' derives from the Old English hlinc — rising ground. Links courses are built on narrow strips of sandy, undulating terrain between the sea and farmable inland ground. Characteristics include firm and fast fairways, deep pot bunkers, wispy rough, coastal wind and no trees.
Scotland has the world's finest concentration of links golf — Fife, East Lothian and Ayrshire alone contain a dozen world-class venues. Northern Ireland has Royal County Down and Royal Portrush. England's Lancashire coast and Kent's Sandwich Bay are the country's finest links areas. Wales has Royal Porthcawl and Pennard.
